FRENCHBRAID - "BLACK TEARS"

Here's the latest slice of twisted genius nursed from Mississippi's ever flowing teat. FRENCHBRAID is a collaboration between singer/songwriter Joshua Clark (formerly of BOY and LIVING BETTER ELECTRICALLY) and producer Misha Hercules. Their debut track is called "Black Tears." Listen below, and catch their debut performance tonight at our very own New Year's eve party with DENT MAY GROUP and DEAD GAZE at Lamar Lounge.

ZORNED IN: TIM MAIA

We can't stop listening to Luaka Bop's new compilation of tunes from legendary Brazilian musician TIM MAIA, a controversial figure whose reputation for excess is almost as famous as his transcendent take on American soul and funk music. He was deported from the USA for marijuana possession in 1963, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult at the height of his fame, and ballooned to over 300 pounds thanks to his appetite for booze, drugs, and food. Unfortunately, he collapsed on stage in 1998, leading to his untimely death at the age of 55.

The compilation's title, "Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia," perfectly captures the meditative yet celebratory philosophy behind Maia's tracks. You can stream the entire compilation HERE.

FREAK HEAT WAVES + THE ADULTS @ Lamar Lounge 11/28/12

Victoria, BC's FREAK HEAT WAVES are headed to Lamar Lounge next Wednesday 11/28. The Canadian trio's angular post-punk guitars, infectious krautrock bass grooves, and detached vocals wouldn't be out of place at CBGB in 1978, but Freak Heat Waves are straight out of Canada's fertile DIY scene. Their album was recorded by the late Christopher Reimer of WOMEN. Be sure to pick up a copy at the show.

Opening will be local sweethearts THE ADULTS, surely one of Oxford's most promising new bands.  Show starts at 9pm. Cover charge is $5. See y'all there.

HOW TO DRESS WELL + BEACON + CHILD STAR @ Proud Larry's 11/26/12

Highly acclaimed R&B deconstructionist HOW TO DRESS WELL (birth name: Tom Krell) released one of the undisputed best albums of the year, and his new live band is getting rave reviews across the world. Lucky for y'all said live band will be crash landing from outer space at Proud Larry's next Monday 11/26.

Direct support will be BEACON, a Brooklyn duo who describe their music as "a combination of deep south bass music and ambient pop melodies, with R&B tinged vocals that accompany warm arpeggiated synthesizers." Yes, please.

Opening the show is CHILD STAR, Oxford's own future pop legend in the making. This show is the Monday after Thanksgiving break, so you'll wanna make up for all the time spent with your parents by indulging in some next level tunes and stiff drinks. Doors are at 8pm.  $10.

NUDE BEACH + DEAD GAZE @ LAMAR LOUNGE 11/17/12

Brooklyn, NY's NUDE BEACH have already been compared to all the greats: Petty, Costello, Westerberg, Lowe, etc. Their new album II was just released by Other Music Recording Co, a label collaboration between the great NYC record store and our friends at Fat Possum. The record is a must buy.

We're taking over the legendary 40 WATT in Athens, GA this Saturday after the Ole Miss vs UGA football game.  All your favorite bands will be there: DENT MAY, BASS DRUM OF DEATH, DEAD GAZE, and ILLLS.  Cover charge is $5, so if you're in Georgia this weekend, you have no excuse.  This might be the most unreal party to ever happen!

WARM SODA + THE UNWED TEENAGE MOTHERS @ LAMAR LOUNGE 10/11/12

Matthew Melton, the man behind BARE WIRES (and the photographer of THIS iconic album cover) is making his triumphant return to Oxford with his newly-formed project, WARM SODA.  The east Oakland glitter kings are in the middle of a 33 date United States tour, and will be playing the LAMAR LOUNGE on Thursday, October 11.  Check out "Reaction" below, and pick up the 7" from the band or at  OUR FAVORITE LOCAL RECORD STORE.

Opening will be Oxford's favorite band of misfits, THE UNWED TEENAGE MOTHERS. These dudes are fresh of the release of A NEW 7" as well, and are out for blood.  We'll give it 3 songs before Johnny Valiant is topless.  Doors at 9, $5.

TOPS + DEAD GAZE (SOLO SET) @ LAMAR LOUNGE 10/3/12

TOPS, the amazing dreamy and lush pop band from Montreal, QC, are playing at LAMAR LOUNGE this Wednesday 10/3/12.  Listen to their excellent debut album, "Tender Opposites," in full HERE to get in the mood.

Brooklyn, NY's finest FRANKIE ROSE performs at the Cats Purring Dude Ranch next Wednesday 4/11/12, hot on the heels of her fantastic, highly acclaimed album "INTERSTELLAR."  Frankie is a former member of Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, and Dum Dum Girls, but she's in a league of her own with this new stuff, which finds her moving on from C86 jangle into the realm of shoegazey 80s synth pop.  Opening the show will be the excellent Brooklyn band DIVE (the project of Beach Fossils guitarist Z. Cole Smith).

Perennial homies of Cats Purring REAL ESTATE play the Cats Purring Dude Ranch this Sunday 4/8/12.  Yes, that's Easter, so ditch your boring family early and come hang out.  This is Real Estate's third show in Oxford, so most of you don't need our seal of approval to know this will be an unforgettable affair.

Australian band TWERPS open the show.  We caught them play in Brooklyn last week, and they ripped it.  The great UNDERWATER PEOPLES put out their debut LP last year, so bring extra cash to cop that alongside Real Estate's latest classic DAYS at the merch table.

We're honored to be presenting two strikingly original and thrilling acts at the Cats Purring Dude Ranch this Saturday 3/3/12.  GRIMES is the highly acclaimed and inventive electronic pop project of Montreal's Claire Boucher.  Her brilliant new album VISIONS is out now on 4AD.  (We strongly encourage you pick it up from that new record store that's opening in town.)

Openers BORN GOLD have been to Oxford, MS twice under their previous moniker Gobble Gobble.  If you were at either of those shows, you're aware of the high energy synth blasts, blissful pop hooks, and kaleidoscopic theatrics these dudes bring with them everywhere they go.

Many of you have heard about the hotly anticipated record store opening right around the corner from the Cats Purring Dude Ranch in Oxford, MS.  THE END OF ALL MUSIC will open its doors at 10am this Thursday 3/1/12, and they've got a weekend full of events to celebrate.  DEAD GAZE will play an in-store set on Friday at 4pm, and JACK OBLIVIAN will perform on Saturday also at 4pm.  DJ HWY 7 will be spinning records all weekend.
