REST IN PEACE

PEYTON HOVIOUS "LARRY" HOUCHINS
December 19, 1986 - December 29, 2010

Many of you know we lost a beloved member of our family earlier this week, PEYTON "LARRY" HOUCHINS a.k.a. DJ SCARY MILK a.k.a. DJ KATE BUSCH. Peyton performed with GRAY THINGS and BASS DRUM OF DEATH, and he provided endless support to our music scene in Mississippi. He will continue to be a source of inspiration for his seemingly infinite number of friends, and we look forward to expanding the Cats Purring empire in his memory.

Here is a 2-hour-long mix of tunes, originally intended to be posted on this blog, that he put together in August of 2010 under the DJ KATE BUSCH moniker. Click the link to download:

TOMMY TOUSSAINT - "COSMIC CAVERNS"

CATS PURRING is proud to present COSMIC CAVERNS, a free digital E.P. of new material from TOMMY TOUSSAINT. Tommy was living in Athens, Georgia, where he played with RED LEGS and LITTLE FRANCIS and spent his spare time exploring caverns of the Deep South. More recently, he's traveled the world as a member of DENT MAY's band. According to Tommy, these six songs were recorded "in a cave in North Georgia," and the E.P. was mastered by Neil Zumwalde, who has worked with VELVET DAVENPORT. Drawing from influences as diverse as new jack swing, 60s pop, new age, and all forms of psychedelia, COSMIC CAVERNS is a warped and wonderful slice of pop magic.

TV BUDDHAS + DOOMSTAR! @ RED STAR 9/14

TV BUDDHAS (Tel Aviv, Israel + Berlin, Germany)
Self proclaimed kings of geek bubblegum! Heavily influenced by The Ramones, The Replacements and Richard Hell, with lyrics leaning more towards the outsider approach of Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers.

"’60s style R&B attitude a la The Pretty Things collide head-first with a jangly entanglement of treble and echo laden garage stomp brutality. This is the surf rock for oil contaminated beaches." -Decibel Tolls

DJ HARRY LOUCHINS (of Airships) on the virtual 1's & 2's!

GOBBLE GOBBLE LATE NITE HOUSE SHOW 8/26

"The space-time fluctuations between GOBBLE GOBBLE’s last hermetic flu-gaze sacrifice has eclipsed the infinitely-many quantum mechanical predictions. The 8-bit pop peculiarity has transcended into a neo-audible movement of Masonic proportions. On top of a dazzling live show, main songwriter Cecil Frena’s ability to funnel radio-pop insanity through a gnarled nozzle of chromatic-pop has aggrandized; jarring cut-ups, blasted synth workouts, and the crunchiest pop-riddums you’ve ever heard." - Weird Canada

GOBBLE GOBBLE will bring their MOBILE RAVE INFINITOUR to 401 S 18th St in Oxford, MS, after the COLOUR REVOLT show at Proud Larry's tomorrow (Thursday 8/26). See y'all there!

Thursday, August 19, 2010

BACK TO SKOOL W/ G-SIDE @ PROUD LARRY'S 8/20

Internationally acclaimed Huntsville rap duo G-SIDE will be headlining our BACK 2 SKOOL BASH this Friday 8/20 at Proud Larry's. PITCHFORK describes their sound as "a woozy, synth-based, bottom-heavy crawl that treats big-room trance the way OutKast and UGK records used to treat 70s soul." For a sample of their distinctly Southern yet innovative jams, check out G-SIDE's essential HUNTSVILLE INTERNATIONAL MIXTAPE.

Opening the show will be the excellent Jackson, MS hip hop groop B.O.M.B. SQUAD w/ special guests! Tickets are $8, and the show starts at 10PM sharp. See y'all there!

BUFFALO MOON + CHELSEA BOYS @ RED STAR 8/18

BUFFALO MOON of Minneapolis (via Ecuador and South Dakota) will bring their wonderful bossanova/psych/pop sound to RED STAR on Wednesday 8/18. Their forthcoming 7" single on the great MOON GLYPH (Velvet Davenport, PC Worship, etc) has been receiving widespread acclaim, which is well-deserved considering the tropical perfection of its b-side "Low Tide Moon" (available HERE).

CHELSEA BOYS (also of Minneapolis) will be opening the show with their highly energetic synth-pop. The MN DAILY describes their performance as "a splash of Nintendo, a dollop of cocaine, a sprinkle of Black Flag and an ocean of sex," so in other words you're insane if you sleep on this one.

DJ HARRY LOUCHINS (of Airships) will man the virtual 1's & 2's, pumping out global synth and disco grooves between sets.

Doors at 9pm. Bands at 10pm. $5 cover.

We're having another house party at the TEEN WING in Taylor, MS tonight!

RAYON BEACH (Austin, TX)
"Rayon Beach take us on an incredible ride through surreal soundscapes and off-center arrangements, and pull it all together under a tight black umbrella, soaked in afterbirth and glowing like weird moon rocks." - Hozac

NAOMI PUNK (Seattle, Wa)
"The fresh-baked melodies and jarring jangles are enough to induce a peyote trip. This is the kind of music that makes you stoked to be alive" - Weekly Tape Deck

MASTERS & JOHNSON (Olympia, WA)
"These young dudes look like they grew up in a Ballard tavern circa 1978. They sound like a grungy, fuzzy, northwest take on experimental post-punk." - Menthol University Press

BARE WIRES + CCR HEADCLEANER + UNWED TEENAGE MOTHERS @ RED STAR 5/26

Excellent show coming up Wednesday 5/26 at The Lyric's Red Star Bar:

San Francisco's BARE WIRES describe their 70s glam inspired sound as "slop pop." The band's leader Matthew Melton was born & raised in Memphis, TN, and their excellent 2009 LP ARTIFICIAL CLOUDS was mastered by the late great JAY REATARD. Check the video for the album's title track HERE.

CCR HEADCLEANER also live in San Francisco, but they started as Athen's, GA noisy psych-rock band LONG LEGGED WOMAN. These guys also run the label POLLEN SEASON (Sic Alps, Dadfag, The Hospitals, etc). HERE's an interview with them from SF Weekly.

You're probably already familiar with Oxford's UNWED TEENAGE MOTHERS now, but they're basically a supergroop featuring members of Lover!, Bass Drum of Death, Black & Whites, The Sleepwalkers, etc. Don't sleep on their latest 7" single from Tic Tac Totally (Bare Wires, Lost Sounds, Wavves, etc) available HERE.
